Sunday Snapshot

It's time for a Sunday Snapshot. Post the last paragraph or several lines of dialogue you wrote. It doesn't have to be perfect, it doesn't even have to be good. It just has to be yours.

Here's mine:

“I am delighted to make your acquaintance.” Roger released her hand to take Audra’s instead. He brought it to his lips in a brief kiss.

Audra’s eyebrows slid so high that they disappeared under her frowsy bangs. “I’m delighted, too.”

Roger smiled and let go of her hand.

“Shall we go in?” he said, looking at Ginger. “We can have a drink inside.”

“Yes, please.” Ginger stood up and pushed her hair back against the wind.. “Audra?”

Audra waved them off. “Oh, no. You two get acquainted. I wouldn’t want to intrude on young love.”

  1. Hi, Christine. I followed you over here from Flogometer, after you posted in the Organic Writing thread. (I'm another panster.) :)

Love the idea of the Sunday Snapshots. And I enjoyed reading yours. What kind of book are you writing?

I hesitate to post this; it's SO first draft. But here goes. This is from my fantasy WIP. I just wrote this snippet today. The POV in this scene is that of a young girl, Jona. (This contains some strong language, which I masked to be polite. I very rarely use such words, but Sami has a foul mouth sometimes and here it contains an important clue for Jona.)

Time passed in a blur for Jona: long days trudging through the forest, long nights shivering in the cold, long silences filled with bleakness and pain. With Mama gone, she felt like a flower torn from the earth, her roots raw and exposed, her petals wilting, and no way to replant herself.

This was not how things were supposed to go. Her father was supposed to come for her and Mama, and take them away to ride on the ships with wings. Mama was supposed to get well and have a baby who would be Jona's little brother.

Instead, Mama and the baby got eaten by a white owl, Jona was left with a huge, bleeding wound inside, and her father was not, after all, taking her to travel the great waters. Not yet, anyway.

First, he had told her, they must go see the Elder.

"Who is the Elder?" she asked.

Sami started to mutter something about a "vile old ****" and "murdering *****" and a "perverted cult" but her father cut him off and said firmly, "She is a seer of great wisdom, who is caring for Sami's sister. We are going to fetch her."

Sami got that funny look again, as if he knew a secret, but didn't like knowing it.

  3. Hi Beth,
I love it! Thank you so much for sharing. I adore finding out a snippet of what other people are writing.
My new novel is an urban fantasy, spun off of my heroic fantasy novel. I'm taking the people I created and imagining what would happen if a remnant were still alive in modern times. But they're dying out and are forbidden to intermarry with humans. Roger, however, decides enough is enough and seduces Ginger over the Internet. She has no idea what she's about to get herself into....

  5. P.S. I just love your imagery, Beth, especially the way Jona feels without her mother. "...like a flower torn from the earth...and no way to replant herself."

    Brilliant.

  6. Thanks, Christine!

And I love the premise of your story. I don't think I've encountered another writer who has tried that.

I apologize for the word verification. I hate it, but the spammers made me do it.
